The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is a valuable tool designed to help you understand what the air quality outside means for your health. It uses a scale ranging from one to 10, where a lower number indicates a lower health risk. This AQHI guides you on how to adjust your outdoor activities based on the current air quality to safeguard your health.
The AQHI ratings are updated every hour, offering both daily readings and regional forecasts. Daily ratings reflect near real-time data from individual stations, while forecasts predict the average concentration of monitored substances across our network. LICA is committed to providing accurate and timely air quality information to the communities we serve. We operate AQHI stations in several key locations, including Cold Lake, St. Lina (rural St. Paul County), Lac La Biche (featuring LICA’s Portable Air Monitoring System), and Tamarack (proximal to oil sands operations). These stations continuously monitor air quality, contributing data used to calculate and forecast the AQHI for our region.

Air pollutants, including ground-level ozone, fine particulate matter, and nitrogen dioxide, can harm your health by aggravating respiratory and chronic diseases. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) helps you understand and respond to your local air quality. Are you at risk? Find out more about air quality and your health here: https://www.alberta.ca/air-quality-and-health.
For the most up-to-date AQHI ratings and forecasts, we encourage you to download the WeatherCAN app or visit https://airquality.alberta.ca/map. Note: LICA’s Tamarack Monitoring Station is identified as “Marie Lake” this website. Additionally, LICA regularly publishes AQHI data on our website and provides annual statistics in our annual report. This commitment ensures you have access to the information you need to make informed decisions about your outdoor activities, keeping health and safety at the forefront.
To further enhance public awareness and accessibility to air quality information, LICA has installed AQHI lanterns at several prominent community locations. These lanterns are located at the Bold Center in Lac La Biche, the Energy Center in Cold Lake, the Bonnyville Library, the Centennial Center in Bonnyville, and the county offices of Bonnyville, Smoky Lake, Two Hills, and Vermilion River. These lanterns change color according to the AQHI scale, from blue for low risk to red for high risk. This color-coding system allows the community to easily understand the current air quality level at a glance, facilitating informed decisions about outdoor activities based on air quality.
