This workshop focuses on bird identification techniques. Participants will learn common features of birding families, and how to ID local species by sight and sound. We discuss reference material, and optics, and practice using the Merlin® Bird ID App. This program can be paired with a birdwatching hike, to allow participants to learn their new skills and try out different equipment.
Approximately 2 hours (Presentation Only) Available Year-Round, however birdwatching excursions are best done in spring and fall (migration).
LICA offers Bird ID kits to borrow, including binoculars, guides, and other accessories. (Deposit is required)

Vermicomposting is an indoor composting solution for any size of home! Reduce your food waste by composting with worms. It’s easy, compact, odour-free, and great for the environment! The Vermicomposting 101 workshop includes a presentation on waste in Canada and the benefits of composting. Participants learn about the care and maintenance of their worm bin. Each household will receive the supplies to build their own bin, including the worms, to take home!

Participants will have the opportunity to start seeds for your garden.

soil painting
Embrace your creative side with our soil painting workshop. We begin with a short presentation to learn about soil and its importance in our environment, as well as LICA’s Soil Acid Deposition Monitoring Program. Participants then have the opportunity to get artsy and create a painting using soil! Different hues are mixed in with a clear acrylic medium, allowing artists to add natural colours and textures to their art. Each participant can take home their own painting, on an 8×10 Canvas.
Approximately 1.5-2 hours.
Available Year-Round, for all ages. Maximum of 20 participants per workshop. Availability of this workshop depends on our inventory of prepared soils.
nocturnal animals
Learn about the creatures of the night in this presentation about nocturnal animals. Discover how bats use echolocation to navigate, learn what makes cat eyes unique, and figure out how owls can hunt in the dark. After the presentation, participants are invited to dissect an owl pellet and try their hand at identifying which rodents the barn owls caught! Participants can take home their findings, encapsulated in a petri dish to keep as a unique and unforgettable souvenir!
Approximately 1 hour.
Available Year-Round, for all ages. Availability of this workshop depends on our inventory of owl pellets.
